About the Rugby League Lions Association

The Rugby League Lions Association is an independent body that represents players, coaches and staff selected to represent Great Britain, England and, in the 1975 World Cup, Wales, on tours or in international tournaments played in the southern hemisphere.

The Association was founded as the British Rugby League Lions Association on November 18, 1945 when 61 men who had represented Great Britain on tour held a reunion luncheon at Belle Vue, Manchester.

The event included every tour captain with the exception of 1914 and 1920 skipper Harold Wagstaff, who had died of infuenza just before the outbreak of War, aged just 48.

Since 1946, the Association has continued to host its annual reunion, helping the Lions rekindle the special and unique bonds built up during long trips to play the greatest game of all on the world’s toughest stage.

The Lions Association is also developing an active fundraising programme designed to create more opportunities for tourmates to get together and raise money for very special causes at the same time.

The RL Lions Association is proud to support the Rugby League Benevolent Fund and in recent years has raised around £50,000 for the charity which provides essential, lifelong support to players from all parts of the sport – men, women, professional, amateur, wheelchair and juniors – who suffer life-changing injuries playing the game we all love.
