Pitchford try 1977 final

Great Britain went agonisingly close to beating Australia in the 1977 World Championship final at the SCG where an unfortunate refereeing decision by Billy Thompson cost them victory.

The Lions lost the game 13-12 after having a second half try by Stuart Wright disallowed because the referee awarded them a penalty for an Australian offside.

One of the highlights of the final was this cracking try by Lion number 367 Steve Pitchford, the Leeds prop who sold an outrageous dummy to crash over.

Steve also set up Great Britain’s other try with a deft pass to Ken Gill, andf though George Fairbairn landed three goals, Australia’s defence held firm and rode its luck.
